“Dec. 17, 1814: Andrew Jackson wrote a special proclamation, honoring the two battalions of African-American soldiers that fought for the United States in the War of 1812 against the British. He had issued the call months earlier, promising free blacks the same wages as white soldiers and promising slaves their freedom. For slaves such as James Roberts, those words inspired. “In hope of freedom,” he said, “we would run through a troop and leap over a wall.” But the pledge proved to be a hollow one for Roberts, just as it had been for him during the Revolutionary War when he had been promised freedom and instead been sold and separated from his wife and children.” ~Clareon Ledger https://amp.clarionledger.com/amp/943216001?__twitter_impression=true .
