Festive ideas for your next dinner party: in total, 1,445 dishes were served at the 1685 banquet for King James II's coronation. The Lancaster Herald of Arms Francis Sanford was commissioned to give a full visual account of the carefully codified ceremonies. In this text, "The History of the Coronation of the Most High, Most Mighty, and Most Excellent Monarch, James II" Sanford records all of the preparations, regalia, participants, robing, procession, banquet, and fireworks. Here, you can see some of the banquet place settings.
Humanities Fellows Abby Westover and Andrés Álvarez-Dávila put together a jolly exhibition for Folger staff featuring records of merrymaking and holiday humor. Keep an eye out for more photos from the exhibition and a new blog post tomorrow about a *messe* of a play.
