Brian Born Oak (Dair na Ború)
Ireland's oldest oak tree, perhaps. It's believed to be over 1,000 years old. I can't even fathom how many acorns this grandmother has produced in her lifetime... Numerous trees have been planted all over Ireland from this very tree!
Brian Ború is one of the most famous Irish Kings of history. He fought the legendary Battle of Clontarf at Dublin and ruled over the kingdoms of Munster and Thomond in the west of Ireland, mostly within County Clare (where this tree resides near the legendary Lough Dearg).
My distant ancestors gained ownership to land not far from here over 500 years ago when there was many, many more oaks covering this landscape of the Slieve-Aughty Mountains. But, very sadly, the great trees were nearly all cut down to serve the iron works in the vicinity. All too unfortunately Ireland didn't seem to ever adopt the practice of coppicing oak trees which allowed for continued production of coal without decimating (just reducing, albeit greatly in some scenarios, if not eventually) the majestic ancient forests of Western Europe.
The truth is that much of this effort was directed towards producing armaments, or tools of destruction or control of the Earth's natural landscape or it's inhabitants. We are waking up to this tragedy that we've been duped into supporting and be-lie-ving in as necessary for our "advancement" as a people.
This mighty, steadfast Oak stands as a testament to the power latent, still, in all of us and the natural world of which we are a part of. It is not time to give up, but to *wake up* and follow our hearts' vision of what is to be created now, not in the spirit of control and destruction or in revenge for the evils of the past or present, but what is truly present within our hearts which brings us together and back to the spirit of what we were created to do.
