This is a long one, be advised.
I rarely post political thoughts; too divisive. But I, too, am divided... Im traveling to Washington DC. I was born there. My patriotism was born there. I know most of the words to at least 10 patriotic songs.
I will celebrate "Thanksgiving" traditionally with family and football.
Yet Ive refused to watch a game this season. And I don't eat turkey.
With pride, I buy the last GQ issue at the newstand with Kap on the cover.
I lay it on my American Flag scarf and take a picture to post.
I have Choctaw blood. Yet I root for the Washington Redskins.
I wear a band on my wrist everyday in support of the troops.
Some days I wear my "take a knee" t-shirt, too. (A US Marine was the first to suggest to Kap that he "take a knee"; more respectful than sitting during the Anthem.) I am listening to the "Hamilton" soundtrack for the hundredth time.
There's a phrase in "Hamilton", "diametrically opposed". That's how I feel.
I'm African-American. "Happy Thanksgiving", but not really. "Happy Family and Friends" to everyone who this post finds. I pray from my heart that you are well. "Happy Soldiers" who may or may not be home. I pray from my heart that you can sleep well. "Happy Volunteers" who feed the homeless this week (and each week when the rest of us don't pay attention).
"Happy Americans" who make this country the most beautiful, ugly, love, hate, family, stranger, samaritan, uncaring, dysfunctional harmonious place for the past 396 years (the "First Thanksgiving)". Love.
